The payment could help you manage the financial consequences of a serious illness.

You may choose to use it to repay or reduce your mortgage, replace lost earnings, pay household bills or make necessary changes to your home.

At MortgageKey, our protection advisers can explain how critical illness cover works and help you compare suitable policies from a range of insurers.

What you need to know

What is critical illness insurance?

Critical illness insurance is a type of protection policy that normally pays a one-off cash sum following the diagnosis of a specified medical condition.

The illnesses covered and the definitions used vary between insurers. A diagnosis alone does not always guarantee that a claim will be accepted. The condition must usually meet the exact definition contained within the policy.

Critical illness insurance is commonly arranged alongside life insurance, although it may also be available as a separate policy.

How does critical illness insurance work?

When taking out critical illness cover, you select the amount of cover required and how long you want the policy to last. You then pay a monthly or annual premium to the insurer.

If you are diagnosed with one of the critical illnesses covered by your policy, you can submit a claim. The insurer will review the medical evidence to establish whether your condition meets its policy definition.

Some policies require you to survive for a specified period following diagnosis before a full payment can be made. The applicable period will be explained in the policy documentation.

If the claim is accepted, the insurer will normally pay the agreed lump sum. The money can usually be used in any way you choose.

What conditions does critical illness insurance cover?

The medical conditions covered depend on the insurer and the type of policy selected. Many policies provide cover for conditions such as:

  • Certain types and stages of cancer
  • Heart attacks of a specified severity
  • Strokes resulting in specified symptoms
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Certain forms of organ failure
  • Major organ transplants
  • Some forms of permanent disability
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Motor neurone disease

This is not a complete list, and not every diagnosis will meet the insurer’s definition. For example, some less advanced cancers or conditions without specified symptoms may not be covered.

The number of conditions listed by an insurer should not be the only consideration when comparing policies. The quality and scope of the medical definitions can be equally important.

Frequently asked questions about critical illness insurance

Can critical illness insurance cover previous medical conditions?

Existing medical conditions may be excluded from cover, although this depends on the insurer’s underwriting decision. You must disclose all information requested during the application.

Will critical illness insurance pay if I cannot work?

A critical illness policy pays when you are diagnosed with a covered condition that meets the policy definition. It does not normally pay simply because you cannot work. Income protection may be more relevant for protecting against a broader inability to work.

Can I cancel critical illness insurance?

You can normally cancel your policy at any time. If you stop paying the premiums, your cover will end and you will usually receive no money back.

Does critical illness insurance cover terminal illness?

Terminal illness benefit is commonly associated with life insurance rather than standalone critical illness cover. Whether it is included will depend on the type of policy and its terms.

Does a critical illness policy pay more than once?

Most traditional policies make one full payment and then end. Some policies provide smaller additional payments for specified conditions without ending the main cover. The available benefits depend on the insurer and policy selected.

Important information

Critical illness insurance does not cover every illness or every form of a listed condition. A claim will only be payable where the policy’s terms and medical definition are met.

Critical illness insurance has no cash-in value. If you stop paying your premiums, your cover will normally end and you will not receive any money back. Policy definitions, exclusions and eligibility requirements vary between insurers. Please read the policy documentation carefully before proceeding.
